The Mask:

MalDukKi | Portrayed as a servant in the old traditional plays. Here is more of an aesthetic description of the mask from mask.org – "Much larger than other masks. Its nose extending from the brow to the jaws is big, producing a young and rebellious image. Thus, its appearance overwhelms Yangban. In particular, [MalDukKi] Tal is aesthetically outstanding. The mask has several characteristics in its shape including the ground color of the face, the big ears and fat earlobes."

The Character:

This character has an overwhelming loyalty to his friends. Although not very bright, he's very practical at times. He keeps things simple.

The Weapon:

SMG from CS. Often this character's practicality can often be confused as being extremely cheap. He doesn't like to spend money, but will spend enough to get the job done.

Got a few other characters in mind for this series, but will be taking a slight break to work on some other illustrations. Stay tuned, folks.

The Drunk Monk| Choegwari, the dissolute old Buddhist monk character from Eunyul Talchul. He drinks alcohol and lusts after young women. In the old traditional dances Choegwari is shown feasting, drinking and reveling in his wealth. The fullness of his chin shows that he loves food.

These folk dramas reflect the antipathy and resentment felt by the common people towards the nobility, due to the latter's harsh and severe treatment of the commoners."

The Aristocrat | the Korean mask on my dude is called Yang-ban, which means aristocrat. By definition an aristocrat is "regarded as the best...of its kind". He is our main character.

Yo yo yoooo! As many of you know Comic-con 09 over in San Diego just happened and I've been waiting for a couple months to reveal this work I did for IMAX.

My girlfriend, Allison works in marketing over at IMAX corporate and came up with the idea to create these bags to spread the IMAX love around. She then gave me the opportunity to hit up the bag with an illustration and of course I accepted.

Here's what came out of it:

I was going for like an old-school Jack Kirby type feel for the illustration.

Hope those who went to comic-con were able to pick one of these bags up.

I know I've been promising some video work, but photography's been kinda piquin my interest. Nothing serious, just a little hobbity hobby.

So far I've been into hittup the photographs with a cross-processing style that can be done in Photoshop. It seems to be gaining a lot of popularity these days almost to the point of being typical, but I aint trippin. I'mma work that shiiiiiitt.

So lately, like everyone and their moms and second and third cousins, I've been wanting to do a little photography. What I've realized is...

that I suck.

Well, I wouldn't say that I suck completely, but I think a big part of photography is to have the confidence and willingness to take your camera everywhere and shoot anything and anyone. I know, I know –Don't be scurred. Whatever. I'm gonna keep tryin it out and we'll see. I'd like to take more shots of people and individuals... so I might try it out.

Anyways, the reason I'm talkin about this is because I went to Austin, TX and what better way to tell you about it than through pictures (xanga?)?! PHOTOBLOG!

You know what sucks when drawing a picture? Creating backgrounds. I seriously have no idea what the fuck to put sometimes.

So I've been having random reunions with some old high school friends and a couple have asked me to do some art for them.

Here's a portrait request done for the homie Kyle for his friend.

This one was kind of a challenge because 1. it was a girl, and I suck at drawing girls and 2. the background issue. Took me awhile, but I think I'm okay with what came out. sigh. Just gotta keep practicin.

Anyways, just got this in my email and thought I'd share this gem of knowledge for those in relationships. haha. YUH!

NINE WORDS WOMEN USE

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' .That will bring on a 'whatever') .

(8) Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying F-- YOU!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

Samur-ride

HOKAY. One month hiatus. Don't hate.

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet, but pretty much my homie Brian Yoon told me about Ride's annual snowboard-design contest this year and I decided to sign up last minute. (You can check out Brian's dope ass design here)

First prize: $1000 and a one-of-a-kind snowboard with the winning design on it. Tight.

First concepts:

The first one is supposed to be ssome monster-mountain chasing a snowboarder. Not sure what the snowboarder is doing with his hands.

The second is a samurai who just finished an epic dual by slicin off some dude's head.

...Don't judge me.

Since I've been wanting to do a samurai piece for awhile I went with the second one.

WHAT UP. Thought I been sleepin on it, didn't you? Didn't you?!!

Alright, so as of November 5th my cougar girlfriend (she's older than me *brushes shoulder off*) is officially 24 years of age. Since she's a huge stars wars gee- uh..fan I decided I'd whip up a little piece for her. No, not that piece, pervs, a Star Wars themed piece. Since she happened to have a skateboard deck lying around that she planned to do some Star Wars thing on anyway I decided to be awesome and do it myself. Of course, the only problem I needed to solve then was how exactly to paint a skateboard. So I did what I always do when I need to figure something out: I do a little Googlin. Unfortunately, all my searches turned up a bunch of weak ass tutorials that either said, 'step 1: paint step 2: done!'; had no pictures (...I like pictures, okay? Die.); or turned up a bunch of videos of this guy who calls himself Spraycasso. His stuff was actually pretty tight, but not the style I was going for. Good thing for me though, my boss from the Des|MA fab lab has a background in carpentry and gave me some pretty good advice on how to get started. After I was done with the board, I figured I might as well provide my own tutorial on how to paint a skateboard since I couldn't find a decent one out there. Let's do this:

HOW TO PAINT A SKATEBOARD

TUTORIAL

Sketch the Idea

I usually don't seriously sketch out my ideas before a project, but I figured this time I should put out all my ideas on paper before committing to paint. I let this phase ride out for a day just to get all the ideas out that I could.

Buy/choose Deck

You can either buy a deck for like 20 bucks on ebay or something, or an old, crappy skateboard if you have one lying around (If you have an old skateboard you want to fully restore check this tutorial out I found while Googling stuff).

If your skateboard comes with trucks and wheels, go ahead and pop those off.

Sand the Surface

I used 120-grit paper to strip the paint off then 240-grit paper to prep the wood. I believe using anything finer than that won't do much for it. Allocate a good amount of time to this because it'll take you longer than expect.

Mask

Get some masking tape -I recommend 3m because you can't really go wrong with it, but the cheaper stuff should work, too- and mask the edge of the skateboard off. I like to mask it off close the edge and leave the side of the wood deck showing, but you can go all the way if you'd like.

Primer

Okay, so for some reason, I just decided not to do this part. Why? Pretty much because I'm a dumbass.

Yeah. That's the only reason.

:(

My boss recommended using an enamel-based primer (I forgot why), and make sure to use a color that closely matches the dominant base color you are using. You can get a can of primer at your local hardware store or auto shop.

I'm sure there are other methods of doing this like applying acrylic gesso or something, but honestly, I'm not entirely too sure. I just know that this is one of a few ways you can go.

Supposedly, primering makes it easier to paint.
Psh. Easy? Charles doesn't need easy.

Sketch it on

Like I said before, I didn't hit my board up with primer and explains why the picture above shows the board with my sketch on wood. Again, I am lame and make sure you do this part after you primer.

Paint

FFFFFAAACKKK this took me HELLLLLLAAA long. Without the primer I had to put down a grip of layers of paint because the stupid wood kept showing through. Meaning I had to apply, wait for it to dry, then apply again, then dry, then apply, then dry, etc. which can get really, really crappy after awhile. SO MAKE SURE YOU PRIMER.

Okay, paint.

Recently, I started choosing a set of 3-5 colors to work with before I actually start a piece which helped resolve some mismatching/clashing color issues I was having with my old works. Choosing a few colors helps keep everything consistent, so If you're like me and have problems with color, I found this nice site called Kuler which helps people like me with color issues.

Here is my painting process in a nutshell (sorry, no step-by-step pictures, I didn't plan on doing this tutorial beforehand):

1. background- Get that background covered. You don't wanna go back and mess up ur main piece by getting background colors on it when you wanna cover that little section of wood showing through.

2. base colors - Don't be scurred. Seriously, use a fatty brush and cover it up. I used a big flat/bright brush to cover large areas but keep sharp edges. Don't be scared to lose the line work of your sketch; use the colors to guide the piece.

3. shadows - at this point start filling in your basic shadows. I like to go from dark to neutral.

4. highlights - this is one of my favorite parts. I think it's because you can finally see the work coming through.

5. LINE IT UP - yeeeeeeeeeeayuh. Since my piece was required a lot of line work, I bought some Uchida DecoColor Opaque Paint Markers t o use in place of a brush. I didn't know what sizes to get so I got a broad, fine and extra fine line. If anything, you can use em to vandilize some bathrooms. jk.

Before I begin the next step I'd like to share a story of something awesome that happened to me.

-Rewind to a few days before I started painting-

Remember when I said that Allison planned to wo rk on the deck herself before this? Yeah, well she had a can of clear-coat lying around her apartment and being the cheap asian that I am thought, 'Hm...Allison has clear coat. Hey, I'm gonna need clear coat. She was gonna use the clear coat for her deck, anyway. ...My clear coat. heh heh heh~.' and being the sly fox that I am (yes, I am sly-cheap-asian-fox-man) hid it and swiped it away unbeknownst to her.

-Cut to me just finishing the painting-

So there I was, satisfied...proud, standing before this fully painted deck that was ready to get polished with a nice set of clear coat. Everything went in slow motion, like at the end of those sports movies during the game winning touchdown pass. I throw on some gloves and a mask, bring the deck outside and start rattling the clear coat. Two minutes later, it's ready. Finally. It was time to finish it.

So heppy...

I popped the cap open...

pressed in the nozzle...

and with a nice steady stroke...

I unleashed a nice,

beautiful

coat

of...

white.

Coping
So for the same reason I didn't primer the board, i t actually took me a few more strokes to realize that I was friggin spraying white paint all over the piece. After some screaming and a lot of cursing I had to just suck it up and repaint the parts I sprayed. Thankfully, most of the paint hit the stormtroopers and all I had to do was reapply some black to vader and reline up most of the piece.

Moral of the story: Life doesn't like me.

Okay, let's continue.

Clear Coat

Alright, last part. Now before you do this, set your deck up on a nice even surface if it isn't on one already. Here's a picture of a guy's snowboard setup as an example. I just set mine up on an old milk crate that was laying around.
Alright, NOW hit your deck up with some nice clear coat and MAKE SURE IT'S CLEAR COAT. I'm sure you can use a number of things, but I went with Krylon: Triple-Thick Clear Coat Glaze. Yeeaayuh. I gave it about 5 or 6 coats with about 2 minute set time in between each coat. Find a nice dry, clean and ventilated place to store the deck then let it sit for a few hours (should be directions on the can that shows how much time needed to dry). I let mine sit for a whole day. When it's all done, you can either put on (or back on if you already had them) trucks and wheels or just leave it. Then skate on or hang up. Enjoy.

Yo, so I've been really diggin this guy named Carl Critchlow's style lately. Something about it reminds me of Mike Mignola, but with a lot more linework and less black applied. He's also got a pretty sick painting/digital painting style, too, but I'm more in favor of the comic-y stuff. Couldn't find any recent work from him, but the stuff he's produced is pretty nice. As I was sitting in my patio working on a project yesterday, I was looking at my two unused easels and thought to myself how much it is of a damn shame to have left them like that. In addition to this was a sense of guilt because both of them were gifts; one from my pops and the other from j5. With that thought mixed with a little guilt, I had a sudden urge to get my paint on. So I did.

My sister had a few acrylic paints and a brush set laying around, and I had one leftover canvas from an old art class that I took a while back, so I was like, whhhaatt, and busted it all out and got to work.

Well, almost.

I was all geared and ready to go: easel: check; canvas: check; paints: check; brushes: check; idea: ...idea: ...idea: ...fuck.

Turns out that it's probably a good idea to sketch out an idea or thumbnail or something like that of what you want so that when you're ready to start painting you just go. So after 15 minutes of having a staring contest with this blank canvas, I thought to myself, don't be scurred, foo, mixed up some peach color and threw it on. Initially, I just wanted to make a regular face, but I messed up a couple times and just went with it. I really just played with the whole thing. That's what she said?

Anyways, after a near 4-year painting hiatus it was fun to get back on some physical painting. Although it's nothing crazy, I'm satisfied with the results. Here's the painting:

Kollaboration 09 auditions!

YO, I got some news for you. Check it out - this Sunday, October 12th, Kollaboration is holding auditions for its 9th annual show on Feburary 21, 2009 at the Shrine Auditorium (pictured below). Whhat whhhaatttt! That's right! That means a live audience of 6,300 guests!

For those that don't know what Kollaboration is, it's an Asian-American talent show that seeks to 'Empower through Entertainment'. As the show grows so does the potential fame that awaits the performers of Kollaboration. So far our past performers have gone off to do movie soundtracks, featured in films, done commericals, etc. etc. Basically, if you think you got some skills and want to get your foot in the door or test the waters of entertainment then get your ass out there on Sunday! I should also mention that this is not limited to Asian-Americans. Kollab accepts all race and ethnicities who will be able to come on stage as guest performers.* If you want more info you can check out the website, and for clarification Kollaboration is the show where you saw this guy.

Hoolllly shit. It is finally done! After two weeks of hardcore web design cramming, I now have the power to create websites. what whhhattt~

Okay, I know. It's nothing amazing. I don't got any crazy ass flash crap or some super interactive interface, but check out those 'FRIENDS' links. Seriously, check em out. Eh? eeehh?? ...What do you mean 'what do they do?'. They change color when you hover your mouse over them!! Whatever. You don't understand how long it took me to figure that out.

Well now I've got this redesigned blog. ...Now what? Blog? Like, write stuff? Oh. Damn. So what should I write about? My day? ...Who the hell wants to read about me ranting about the long days of my life, or some stupid 'epiphanies' I have to deal with them, or what I frikkin ate for dinner?! I'll tell you who. Nobody. No effin one. That's who. This ain't XANGA.

Upon this thought I pondered some niches I could feel comfortable nestling in: I could be an 'artist' blogger, writing about my sketches/drawings and my influences in pop art today. Meh. I also had this crazy thought about creating a blog documenting some sociological experiement (bein a sociology major) that I 'd secretly conduct while attending UCLA just for fun. Sociology. Just. For. Fun? Scratch that. I played with other ideas and liked none. My main problem with everything was that I didn't want to confine myself to just one thing to write about. I pretty much ended up ditching the whole find-something-to-write-about-then-write-about-it approach and came to the conlclusion to just write about whatever interests me.

Don't ask me why that was so difficult to do. I honestly don't know.

However, there is two thing that I do hope are involved in my future entries: taking chances and doing what I want to do. Around my age, we start to get more scared and insecure about trying new things or meeting new people. We start to think 'I'm too old,' or 'I'm too introverted' or 'It's too late' or simply that 'I'm not good enough'. Or when doing something we love to do, we come to the scary realization that it will not provide us with a security. Well, I'm here to tell you that nothing in life is secure. Your job, your money, your life can be lost tomorrow and taking the 'safe' road is only a detour to an inevitable switch to the 'unpaved' one when you're finally fed up with how things are in your life. Because eventually, you'll wonder what would have happened if you entered that talent show, or took that class, or talked to that professional, or lived in that other country.
